Abstract
Thyroid gland is highly resistant to infections owing to its encapsulation with a firm sheath and abundance of iodide, blood and lymph. So acute suppurative thyroiditis is a very rare disease compared with other inflammatory diseases of thyroid gland. Moreover, primary thyroid abscess rarely develops from acute suppurative thyroiditis. To make the diagnosis of acute suppurative thyroiditis or thyroid abscess early, a high index of suspicion and radiologic study are necessary. We present, with the appropriate review, a case of primary thyroid abscess which was mistaken for a subacute thyroiditis.
